The words recorded are thus considered the actual, authoritative words of God” (Robison); and the Negative Assistance Theory in which “the authors expressed their thoughts in their own style and words, while the Holy Spirit only intervened as needed, in order to prevent them from making any mistakes.”(Robison).
When looked at closely it is obvious that the writers were ordinary men, people who were chosen by God to be his instruments. James Cantelon makes this analogy very apparent when he writes “He breathes into the biblical writers in order to produce the authoritative word of God, rather like a musician blowing into his trumpet, interpreting the mind of the composer and producing the flow of music outlined in his composition.” (Cantelon 193) He chose slaves, kings, and shepherds. He chose fishermen, tax collectors and, in Paul, a persecutor of Christians. All of these men were humans who were not writers by profession. In most cases they were not teachers or philosophers either. They were most likely not capable of producing the works they did on their own. The prophets of the Old Testament could not have known the things they foresaw without the inspiration of God.
