People feel threatened by the nature of free exchange of ideas, which is why music censored for political reasons exists. It exists simply because the government is scared of what those who have become famous think of it. In 1970, after the Kent State University shootings, the band Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young released the song “Ohio” about the tragedy.
“Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.” (Volz 17)
The song was banned from Ohio radio airplay by governor James Rhodes in which he feared that it would cause further campus violence. But that didn’t fix anything, sales of the album soared and the music still got out to the public, with no campus violence (Volz 17).
