“Family Portrait”

One song can bring many different feelings to every person who hears it. It can provide hope to those going through difficult times in their lives, or the beat can make you want to get up and dance. A song can also bring back memories of what you were doing the first time you heard it, and that memory stays with you every time you hear it again.
Pink is a singer/songwriter who has gone through more in her childhood than most people have in their entire lives. She not only uses her music as an expression of her past childhood, but she also can provide some great party music. One of my favorite songs is called “Family Portrait.” This song deals with her parents’ decision to get a divorce, and how it impacted her life. She was only twelve when her father left, and she ended up becoming a rebel. She listened to rap, hip-hop, and rock while growing up, which gives her music a personality of its own.
Every time I hear this song it brings back memories of my parents when they divorced. It is almost like Pink and I were in the same house and experienced the same things. The one part that I can closely relate to in her song is when she says, “ I hear glasses breaking as I sit up in my bed. I told God you didn’t mean those nasty things you said. It amazes me how similar homes are for children of divorced parents.
Pink was given a great gift enabling her to touch peoples emotions with her voice and songs. She also has a great variety letting her sing a song as meaningful as this, then switching to one that allows you to forget about it and dance. I think this is why she has risen to such a great artist. She never dwells on her past. She simply gets it off her chest and moves on.
