Changing Teen Relationships Over Time

rs spend most of their time alone. Dating today is not like it was in the 1950s. Teenagers went out places all the time, often in groups. Today, teenagers still go out places and in groups, but often spend time alone at each other’s homes (Sombat). This is often referred to as “hanging out,” time teens spend alone with each other to “explore” each other’s bodies. In the 1950s, if teenagers wished to be alone, they had to go “park” somewhere. This meant they would drive to a secluded place to “neck” or “pet” in their cars (Sombat). Due to teenagers having the luxury of spending time together at home, they are having intercourse in their parents’ homes. A study showed about half of teenagers first had sexual intercourse there. In addition, it was more likely for teenage boys to have sex at home; whereas, teenage girls claimed to have had sexual intercourse in their partner’s home (Turner 55). This study proves how the lack of parental supervision in today’s society is complicating teenage relationships.
