Sexual objectification of females is not limited to pornography. It has presence in mainstream movies, advertisements, CD covers, songs, magazines, television, art, cartoons, literature, etc. All these factors and then some influence the way in which men view women. Through these materials men, especially young men receive the false message that:
· Women are passive, willing partners in their own victimization, and exploitation.
· Women in pain are glamorous.
· Women are incapable of being independent or self directed.
· It is appropriate that women’s sexuality and behavior be defined by men.
· Men are entitled to frequent, unconditional use of women’s bodies. (Sexual Violence, 1997, p.18-19)
The younger the male the more impressionable they are and the more these messages affect their minds. They grow up seeing women being reduced to merely sexual beings.
The more objectified women become and the more they are seen as sexual beings, sexual violence and rape become a greater concern. It has...
