t both groups were trying to take over the regions of the other blocs or groups though they had the same feeling towards the opposing bloc. They lacked the will to work together as a team this resulted in challenging of Soviet leader ship by communist China in the eastern bloc and in the western bloc West Germany acting independently of United States polices.
In 1961 cold war tensions were high in Europe, Asia and even on the doors steps of the United States in Cuba. The Cuban government of Fidel Castro became openly communist in 1960. He condemned them and began receiving military aid from the Soviet Union and other communist countries. The United States ended diplomatic relations with Cuba in January 1961. It was at this time that the United States placed a trade embargo against Cuba.
It was best put by historian John Lukas in his book, A History of the Cold War when he stated that
On the other hand American prestige and power too suffered a general and, on occasion, astonishing erosion during the sixteen years of then cold war, and particularly during the five years following 1956, the crucial year, perhaps the turning point. In 1945 the United States was the undisputed and the indisputable leader of the free world. By 1961 this leadership may have been still undisputed but it was no longer the undisputable. In her own Caribbean backyard , the word of the united states was no longer the law . In 1945 Andy Peron’s Argentina, the far southern most republic of America could defy America political wishes ; by 1961 the United States, after a half hearted abortive attempt ,the United States thought it better not to interfere drastically with the pro-communist Castro dictatorship in Cuba.” ( Lucks 205-206)
