General Lee left Early in command at Fredericksburg, with his division, Barksdale brigade, and the reserve artillery to watch the movements of General Sedgwick. General Lee then split his forces between the two widely separated wings of the Union Army and prepared for the conflict. General Hooker was not anticipating General Lee to stay and fight. He had planned on forcing the Confederate Army to retreat so he could attack them from behind, and destroy the Confederate Army.

On May 1st General Lee with 41,000 soldiers moved within four miles of Chancellorsville, and just before noon they advanced and drove back General Hooker’s skirmishers. General Lee over watched the battlefield position, and observed Union General Sedgwick’s demonstrations on Stafford heights and on the Rappahannock plain to draw the attention of the Confederate Army.
