e the training was shorter and he would get into combat much faster. After meeting Oswald Boelcke, who became his idol, Richthofen was committed to becoming a pilot. After only twenty-four hours of flight training Richthofen made his first solo flight, however he crashed his plane upon landing.

During Richthofen’s second air combat he exchanged fire with a French aircraft, the allied plane dropped away and crashed behind enemy lines so he was not credited for this kill. Later in his career he would be taken at his word for the enemy planes he had shot down. Richthofen was still an observer when he made his first victory however it could not be officially confirmed.
