The main point here is whether or not there is any legitimacy to the prohibition of Absinthe. If one country’s government deems a certain product illegal, and in the next country that same product is considered legal, then who’s word is the right one when it comes to the debate over whether or not the item in question is “good” or “bad”, moral, immoral etc? After consulting many different books, articles and government documents, as well as trying the drink myself, I must say that, personally, I don’t think that Absinthe is “bad” and is in no way a cause for panic. In 1915, when France banned the drink, it was the last to do so. For two decades after the prohibition, it still had a large underground following though, but the popularity diminished tremendously. Not until the last decade, especially in the last few years, did the drink start to become popular again. Within the last ten years, Absinthe has seen more and more liberality in the eyes of certain governments. But in order to understand where it is now, we must explore its history,
The exact origins of the drink differ from the origins of the drink regarding the “Age of Absinthe”, which occurred in the last few decades of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century in Europe, mostly concentrated in France and England. Absinthe and the French seem to go hand in hand while looking at the period in question. Absinthe though, is not a French institution, it just seems, from records that they consumed higher amounts than any other country, during the Age of Absinthe. When, nearing the age’s end, countries like Belgium and the Netherlands banned the drink, international pressures from doctors and researchers where influencing France to follow but as a report called Absinthe, written in 1913 by William S. Walsh stated that:
