petitioned King James to allow the colonists to immigrate to New England and not persecute them for their religion if they moved there. King James, who hated the Puritans, agreed thinking it would be a way to get rid of them. Hence, the first New England colony was established.# The Puritans were quick to break any ties with the Plymouth Colony by setting up their own charter called the Mayflower Compact. The Puritan colony was the only success of any consequence of the Plymouth Company. This lack of success ultimately killed the Company and was disbanded in 1635. The Plymouth Company was the shortest lived charter company of the age in Britain.
The Virginia Company of London formed at the same time with the Virginia Company of Plymouth, was granted the use of the southern region of North America. Unlike the Plymouth Company, but similar to the East India Company, the London Company had the power to appoint the Council of Virginia, the Governor and other officials, and the responsibility to provide settlers, supplies and ships for the trip. The Company set up its first settlement on a peninsula in the Chesapeake Bay. They named it Jamestown after King James I who had granted them their charter.
