Drugs Being Legalized

If all the drugs in the world became legalized, what would it be like? Would it be a good or a bad idea? Would people use drugs even more than they are now or would they use them less? Shouldn’t people have the right to do whatever they want to their bodies? Does it really make a difference if drugs are legalized or not? In the article, “Drugs” the writer Vidal believes that drugs should be legalized and it would be for the better. In his article he talks about several reasons why drugs should be legalized. In my opinion I feel that drugs a better off left the way they are now and should stay illegal. I feel that if drugs were legalized it would be too much of a drastic change for society and would not be beneficial. In this essay I will talk about what addiction really is, what Vidal views are on why drugs should be legalized, and why I disagree with Vidal’s point of view.
What is an addiction? Being addicted to something is when you are abnormally dependant on something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming. In other words, having an abnormally strong craving for something. According to “TV addiction, there are two things that are


always involved in being addicted to something. First, whatever it is that a person is addicted to, it has to give that person some kind of a high in life. The second thing that is involved in being addictive to something is that a person won’t be able to function properly without having that certain high in life.
Vidal mentions that not all drugs are addictive so there is no point of making all drugs illegal. Vidal used marijuana as an example of a drug that is either addictive or dangerous. And as for heroin, it is addictive and can be deadly dangerous. And for the record, Vidal says that he has tried every drug and never became addicted to any of them.
