Economists insist that the social security program will be tapped later this year to pay the government’s bills despite Bush and Daschle’s promises. After a meeting with President George Bush, democratic leader Tom Daschle was pleased with Bush’s pledges of not touching the social security surplus. Although aware of these pledges, the nations prominent economists are certain it will be exploited because of Bush’s recent 1.3 trillion-dollar tax cut. The social security surplus is projected to be about 157 billion dollars but with the sinking economy and the tax cut, the government will have to divert the funds to cover odds and ends by the end of the year.
This is a problem that effects everyone. In years to come it seems as though social security will be abolished. These high paid politicians have no concern for how the working man will live after retirement because they don't have to worry about getting social security because of their government pensions. With the way the retirement age keeps rising, in 20 years or so there will be no retirement because there will be no social security. Bush’s comments on the tapping of the funds are “ I can say definitely every social security recipient is going to get their check.... I understand how politics works up here. There’s always that scare tactic, trying to tell the American people that the budget process is going to lead them not to get their social security check. That’s just ridiculous.” Sure they are going to get their checks but what a bout the retirees of the future. The people that are paying social security now, where is their check going to be.
Tax cuts are never really good for the nation. It’s just a propaganda technique used to sucker in votes. The government needs a certain amount of money each year to run efficiently and to pay all of its debts.
