High Efficiency of the Public Sector
Have you ever waited in line for an excessive amount of time or have been poorly treated at government agencies? I am almost positive that most of you can answer “yes” to this question. These problems occur due to the monopoly of government agencies. Take the Immigration and Naturalization Service or Department of Motor Vehicle for example. Long lines and discourteous customer service characterize these government agencies. Such issues have existed over many years with no action taken. The public sector, or government agencies, is perceived as being inefficient, non-responsive, bureaucratic, and user-unfriendly. Several enforcements can be taken to improve the quality in the public sector, such as privatizing certain public services, better informing and educating the workers and the customers, installing stronger internal disciplinary forces, and utilizing the public private partnerships.
The government falls into the category of a public sector. Public sectors have a number of downfalls; thus, the government has many problems and issues in their public agencies, such as the INS or the DMV. However, it is important that we recognize and face these problems because the quality and efficiency of the public sector determines the country’s long term growth and the quality of its national welfare. For one, it is very difficult for public sectors to improve in their flaws because they do not get direct feedback from customers by demand. The reason for this is because private sectors have competition amongst each other, while the government is the one and only, having no direct competition. The attempt to better the government agencies can only be made through policy makers, yet the policy makers filter out random information according to their wills and wants.
