Introduction
The war on terrorism has been in existence since shortly after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on 9-11-2001. When the towers came down, America watched in shock and the rage that followed was a roaring, volcanic hot anger from deep in the heart of the nation. The president stood before the country and promised to hunt down those who were responsible and bring them to justice. Americans cried with pride, saluted him from their seats at home and watched the Senate give him more than a dozen standing ovations for his commitment to fight back. While the public supported his efforts the president went to various nations with top secret proof of the involvement of Osma Bin Ladin. Shortly thereafter the war on terrorism began. Since then it has been a slow path, but it is a successful path. There have been members of Al Qeda captured and questioned and the groups have been broken up. The US residents have been put on alert so many times it is becoming routine as the FBI and the CIA continue to uncover plans of additional future attacks. On December 11, 2002 United States President George W. Bush announced to the world that the US is prepared to use nuclear weapons against any nation that engaged in biotechnical or chemical warfare aimed at the US. While the nation’s rage is understandable, and the fear the WTC attacks struck in the lives of the Heartland makes perfect sense, this latest threat by Bush to the world defies everything that America stands for.
SOME BACKGROUND
Terrorism has been a problem in the western world for many years. The WTC attacks were actually the second attempt to bring them down. Years ago several bombs were detonated but the mission failed. Some experts feel it is what drove the development of the plan to use hijacked commercial airplanes, which did bring the towers down and kill thousands of people(Whitaker, 2001).
