Each year over 1.5 million juveniles are placed on this system of control in the United States. The term probation may be loosely defined as when they are set free but may adhere to a specific set of guidelines that may not be broken. They are given a “counselor” and must report to them on a certain schedule. Usually this system is the first straw to straighten the juvenile out. If they continue to break the law, then the authorities resort to juvenile incarceration. This is when they are placed in detention facilities. This becomes a result of increased violence and probation violations. Many of these children are sent to facilities each year. Here they are kept in rooms with other juveniles that have violated the laws. To me it almost seems like a children’s prison. They remain here until they have a trial date to determine other punishment for their crimes...
