Freedom

In the Sep issue of the 1987 Ensign, Jay M. Todd wrote an article entitled, the Standard of Freedom for this Dispensation” and tells of two revelations from the Savior to the prophet Joseph Smith – who spoke of the ‘principle of freedom’ in these last days and related it to the US Constitution.
“And now, verily I say unto you concerning the laws of the land, it is My will that my people should observe to do all things whatsoever I command them. And the law of the land, which is constitutional, supporting that principle of freedom in maintaining rights and privileges, belongs to all mankind, and is justifiable before me.
“Therefore, I, the Lord, justify you and your brethren of my church, in befriending that law which is the constitional law of the land; and as pertaining to law of man, whatsoever is more or less then this, cometh of evil. I the Lord God, make you free, therefore ye are free indeed; and the law also maketh you free.”
From these revelations and many others I’m sure, the Prophet Joseph Smith described in Prophetic imagery the actual ‘spirit of constitutionalism’ when he said, “It is like a great tree under whose branches men from every clime can be shielded from the burning rays of the sun.”
This law of Freedom comes straight from the Savior. So it comes as no surprise to me that many have and continue to fight and die to protect the law of Freedom. Our prophets have told us that everyone has the right to act according to his or her own moral agency – in this is the wisdom of the Lord - that each of us may be accountable for our own sins in the day of judgment.
Through the inspiration of the Lord, we have a branch of legal and governmental systems, which protect individual freedom, and is the catalyst enabling the gospel to go forward to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.
