The novel starts out at a Christmas party where the narrator and a group of people are sharing ghost stories. The narrator starts his story with detail, explaining how the governess, from a broken home, traveled to London to follow up an advertisement for a job as a governess. For the first couple of chapters, everything seems to go right; the children could do no wrong in her eyes, even when Miles was sent home from school, she still thinks he can do no wrong and chooses to ignore his faults. After much sleep deprivation, the governess starts to see things that should not be there, such as possessed children. Once the sightings start, the governess becomes convinced that, their old governer’s possesses the children. After convincing herself of the ghosts, the governess decides to tell the servant of the house Mrs. Grose, an under-educated woman, with a sharp sense of wisdom, and probably the sanest character in the entire book; showing that class does not determine ...
