“Adventure” Sites
The Moremi Game Reserve is considered to be one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Africa, with its diverse plant and animal life. The Reserve is made from mopane woodland and acacia forests, along with floodplains and lagoons. The central area is well known for the height of the trees in the mopane tongue. There are many elephants, as well as buffalo, giraffe, cheetah, leopard, lion, wild dog, and others. The few remaining black and white rhinos have been relocated to the protection of the sanctuary away from illegal hunters. The best time to visit is the dry season when game viewing is at its peak between July and October. But make sure to come with insect repellant and possible an anti-malarial prophylactic, as there are an abundance of mosquitoes in the Reserve (Government of Botswana).
On the flat landscape of the western Kalahari, the four Tsodilo Hills rise above. They form a line and were referred to as “the Male”, “the Female”, “the Child”, and the other unnamed by the San. These hills have been inhabited by the San for thousands of years, and they believe this to be a resting place for the spirits of the deceased. Archeologists have discovered that this area has been occupied by humans for around 100,000 years. There are paintings on the hills that are unlike other Southern African paintings, and this is one of the most historically significant rock art sites in the world. Over half the paintings depict wild animals and some of the others depict what we would consider today, obscene pictures.
