Countries Tanzania Tanzania is a country located in southeastern Africa, which is surrounded on the north by Kenya and Uganda, on the east by the Indian Ocean, on the south by Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia, and on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda. Tanzania includes the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, and other offshore islands in the Indian Ocean. The total area of Tanzania is 364,900 square miles. Dar es Salaam is the capital and largest city. Tanzania is mostly flat and low along the coast, but a plateau that an altitude of about 4000 feet makes up the greater part of the country. Groups of mountains rise in the northeast and southwest. There is a volcano on the northern border called Kilimanjaro that is about 19,341ft high and is the highest mountain in Africa Three of the great lakes of Africa are on the border of Tanzania. Lake Tanganyika is on the western border, Lake Victoria on the northwest, and Lake Nyasa on the southwest. Lakes Nyasa and Tanganyika are in the Great Rift Valley.
