“No TV and no beer make Homer something something,” is a classic
example of writers of the TV show the Simpsons parodying a classic movie, in this
case, The Shining. Parody episodes are one of the three theme based episodes that
The Simpsons writers go back to time and time again. The other two theme based
episodes are “The Treehouse of Horror Halloween” episodes and the many best of
episodes.
One of the most popular and well known of the three types of The
Simpson’s episodes is the Halloween special, “The Treehouse of Horror”. The
Halloween episodes normally include three or four frightening tales in which The
Simpons characters usually experience abnormal things that they wouldn’t in the
regular episodes. The episodes are usually a lot morbid and darker then the regular
episodes. In each “Treehouse of Horror episode, there is the presence of Kang and
Kodos. Kang and Kodos are aliens from outer space and seem to appear in all of
the Halloween episodes, causing havoc on the inhabitants of Springfield. Another
key factor to the Halloween episodes is that this is the only time the opening
credits to the show are completely different. Most of the Halloween episodes are
actually parodies of movies or urban legends.
The Simpsons have a lot episodes of parody or parodies. Each of the Halloween
episodes are parodies in themselves. Even in the regular episodes, the writers
throw in a little bit of something that was a parody, but usually so insignificant that
it’s hard to catch. Two of the most memorable episodes were the parodies of The
Shining and Mary Poppins. In an episode titled
“Simpsoncalifraglisticexpiala(Annoyed Grunt)cious”, a nanny named Sherri
Bobbins, showed up to take care of the Simpson children. Another time, the
writers parodied an old television show called The Prisoner. Homer got stuck on
