Tackling the Monster Video Review
Within all living creatures, knowledge has been thought of being obtained in one of two ways. One of which is through natural inherited knowledge. Through this, we are born with an instinct to do basic tasks, such as eat when hungry, or sleep when tired. These traits create the basic actions and reactions to everyday events. The second way which people believe knowledge is obtained is through learning. Knowledge comes from being taught how to do things, repetition, or through trial and error. In an attempt to not counter this theory at this time, I will show how through this second method, knowledge through learning, may help to create a better student.
In the video Tackling the Monster with Wynton Marsalis and Yo-Yo Ma, we learn of twelve ways to practice. Marsalis shows us that by using these twelve ways, we can better ourselves in any application. Focusing on using these twelve ways in becoming a better student, I will examine how two of these ways may accomplish this purpose. Although I feel many of the twelve overlap and can be found to be similar and dependent on each other, I have chosen way one and way four to further examine.
In way one, Marsalis explains that we must first seek advice and help, or training, from a professional or someone who is an expert in the field we are attempting to better ourselves in. As I mentioned before, knowledge is gained from learning. In order to learn, we must know what we are doing. But if we don’t know what we are doing, than how can we learn? With the help of an expert who can show us how to do perform a certain task, we can then begin to learn the task at hand. As a student, we are expected to not know much of what is to be taught in a class. If we did, there would be no reason in taking the class.
