Advertisements: Shaping the Culture
There is a four year old girl named Riley, who one day her grandmother over heard her say that she was fat. Her grandmother was taken back for a minute, and had no idea what to say to her. This got me thinking about how self conscious people have become about their bodies. This writer came to the conclusion that it is just something every woman has to go through at least one time in her life. But why, what is it that makes every woman want “the perfect body?”
Advertisements play a large part in the culture. The images that are used in most advertisements are directed at fantasies. They portray beautiful, thin people having a great time with whatever product that is being sold. According to ads, all women are stick skinny with very large breasts, and all men have a six pack of abs and the pecs to go along with them. Most all
people wish they looked as perfect as the models in advertisements, and the advertisers use it to their advantage. This is very depressing for the “normal” people of the world. I find it to be discouraging, knowing no matter how hard people try, they can never naturally look like those women. And naturally they have not fallen in love with a man that looks like the men in the ads.
I am is amazed at the lengths that some advertisers go to get people to buy their products. Shopping at a local mall this writer entered a ladies restroom and found little yellow pieces of paper which said: WILLPOWER IN A BOTTLE: Lose up to 30 pounds in 30 days- 30 Day Money back guarantee call: 1-877-292-9804. Advertisers stoop so low by putting up advertisements in bathroom stalls at the mall. It makes sense, women are the ones who obsess about their weight all the time, and most men do not. It is logical that whoever put the little yellow papers in the bathroom stalls only put them in women’s room for that reason. Seeing this advertisement may even cause a woman to star...
