Twister And Its Scientific Innacuracy

3 Pages 696 Words

Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt starred in the movie “Twister”. These two characters showed hardcore dedication to the life of tornado chasing. Along with courage while chasing tornadoes, a love story was intertwined as well. The depictions of tornadoes in the movie were beautiful and done quite well but not scientifically accurate. The special effects to create the tornadoes were done very well and also very realistic to one who is not educated about tornadoes. As for those who are, this movie is almost a disgrace to their job. A tornado chasers job is understated and not credited enough as they help to warn and save people’s lives.
Certain events and weather portrayals were inaccurate. For instance, the air debris goes in toward the tornado and not out. 18 wheel trucks, farm equipment, cows and houses are being flung away when really they would be taken in. All tornadoes have a vertical vortex with an inward flow. They go counterclockwise whipping things inside. As for the wind blowing in the actor’s hair, they were blowing behind them and they should be blowing in front of them on many angles.
Generally during a storm lightning was flashing and crashing at the same time. Technically, light travels faster than sound so lightening is seen before thunder is heard unless a storm is directly ahead. Tornadoes also usually do not drop out of a blue sunny clear sky. Cloud formations are also incorrect throughout the movie. Usually before tornados were to occur, cumulonimbus clouds appear. It’s when the friction on the ground slows the surface winds and in the troposphere the winds blow faster which is what creates the rotation of the air along the ground. When this rotating air comes across strong updrafts, that’s where the vertical alignment of the tornado becomes perpendicular to the ground. When the funnel clouds beat against their parent cloud, that’s where the development of this lowering to earth creates a tornado.
