Fear and Loathing Evaluations
When looking at the movie Requiem for a Dream there is much to take in. The notion that the American Dream is not always available to everyone and good times die hard is very evident in this movie. Of course drugs are very dangerous and shouldn’t be taken likely and heroin is not a laughing matter, but why take away the joy of comedy just to satisfy ones taste for art. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas not only portrays the ups of doing hallucinogenic drugs but also contains a colorful depiction of the harsh realities of the exploding drug culture. Requiem for a Dream is a great movie, it is very accurate in depicting the insanity that runs through an addict’s mind, but because Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is much lighter hearted and deals with more facts, it is clearly the better movie.
Both of these movies started out as books. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was written by the great Hunter S. Thompson and Requiem for a Dream was written by Hubert Selby Jr. Hunter S. Thompson is not just some crazy dope head, he happens to be a very intelligent man. He is the author of many books, many with a political genre. He wrote books about the Nixon Administration in the 70’s and also wrote about experiences with the Hells Angel bikers in a book which is now considered the best book on the infamous biker gang.
Hubert Selby Jr., a native of New York didn’t start writing until the age of 56. Due to many health problems he naturally picked up writing to pass time in the hospital. No formal learning involved he is purely a natural. Hubert writes more novels than factual books. His novels are projections from his mind on many aspects and opinions of life as an inner city youth. Much more depressing than Hunter S. Thompson, Hubert Selby Jr. rarely writes a book with a happy ending contributing to the darkness of the books that go to become movies.
