Nosferatu

F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu was the first film of its kind. This film created the mold for all future horror films to come, though many variations will come, this will still remain the basis. The entire film was done is low light, and even blurry to a point. This may have just been because of the poor equipment of the times, or another tool of the trade to instill the notion of wonder, what exactly is that on the screen. The film was filmed almost entirely on location also, this is a much better method for trying fool the audience into thinking its not a movie, that’s a real castle, not some painted cardboard. Nosferatu made a twist on the classic Dracula that we have all come to know. In virtually all other Dracula films Count Dracula is a suave gentlemen, in this film he is portrayed almost like a rat. He is very tall and skinny; his fingers are much longer than a normal human, his face is long and pointy and his head bald. At the time a character like this had never been seen on screen before, more than likely it was horrifying to most in the early days of film. In this particular version of the film there was no soundtrack to it at all, whether that was how the film was originally shown I don’t know. It made the film much more difficult to watch. There was no ominous music to notify the viewer when something bad was about to happen. Perhaps the soundtrack is just a luxury we have all gotten used to. Another interesting feature of the film is when Jonathan Harker was being picked up by the “phantom coach” and the background was in the negative, so the trees were white and the sky was black. Surely this had to have impressed many audiences in promoting a general atmosphere of eeriness. Another thing that I had not seen done in any previous movies was the one who saved the day in the end was a woman.
