From Surf Racks to Riches

“Shoots bro. “Blue Crush” the movie is Da Kine. Honeys in bikinis that surf pro-style, fer sure. Translated this means “What better subject for a movie than surfing chicks in bikinis”. Taking place in the surfing Mecca that is Hawaii, “Blue Crush” focuses on the lifestyles of today’s surfer youth, especially the female side. It features Eden, Lena, Anne Marie, and Penny as the “surf sisters.” Abandoned by their mother, they live alone doing what they know how to do: surf. But they are not without dreams. Anne Marie has trained her whole life to compete in the Pipemasters at Pipeline, Hawaii, the most prestigious surf contest known. Pipeline is the ultimate proving ground and one good wave there could set her up for life, i.e. sponsors, money, and travel. Everything with the “sisters” is great until Anne Marie meets Matt, NFL quarterback on vacation. Suddenly, Anne Marie sees and experiences the role that females have in high society, and she loses herself along the way. All her friends’ expectations, years of training, and even her dreams seem to drift away, out into the great and massive sea. Not until a lot of soul searching and time in high society does Anne Marie realize who she is and the dreams she is destined for. With a rejuvenated drive for success, Anne Marie competes at Pipemasters. Needless to say she is nervous about surfing Pipe, considering the ten to twenty foot waves that steamroll all in its path and thereafter hurls all who dare to ride it towards shallow, razor sharp coral and deadly underwater caves. After a few failed attempts at catching a wave and watching fellow surfers systematically picked off by injuries, Anne Marie catches one of the nicest waves of the day and executes it perfectly. Even though she does not win the contest, she wins over the crowd and the sponsors, but more importantly, she wins over herself.
