Forrests Gump

We watched Forrest Gump in English class. Every movie has a theme to it or an informational statement they are trying to get across. Maybe not directly but through watching the movie it should be able to get caught through out the movie. The piece of information Forrest Gump gives us is; No matter what you are like, no matter what disability you have, you can do and live a normal and maybe an extraordinary life.
Forrest lives an amazing life despite his handicap. He is a little mentally slow. Usually mentally slow people are looked down upon and thought of as being “stupid”, incapable of doing work or anything constructive. Watching Forrest and his life it shows that you can do as you please when you put your mind into it. He receives honors, medals, meets the president twice, and many more things a “normal” human wouldn’t be able to do. He shows persistence and courage.
We were asked to compare this to a somewhat similar movie. The movie I chose and think is close enough to the situations is “I Am Sam”. I Am Sam is a movie about an autistic father that tries to raise a daughter on his own, but is forced to give her away because he is autistic. He loves his daughter so much and is so determined to get her back he gets a lawyer to help him out. With some luck, persistence, courage, and hope he would win his daughter back. Despite his handicap he was able to work, care for his child and do many more things a “normal” father would be able to do. They show being smart isn’t the only thing needed to be a good parent. Giving the right kind of love plays a big role.
I think these two movies are similar because they are both handicaps in a similar way, and they both have to over come it in some way to prove people wrong and show they can live a “normal” life....
