There are many different forms of discrimination and each other these forms have different names. Generally when most people hear the word “discrimination” they think of racism, sexism, and possibly ageism as well as homophobia. However, there are many other kinds that most likely do not come to mind.
The first word that usually comes to mind when someone mentions discrimination is the word “racism.” Racism is the discrimination on the basis of race and many people have the belief that it is still a huge problem in our country.
Another big form of discrimination in our country is sexism, which is the discrimination on the basis of sex. While this problem is very slowly getting better, the fact of the matter is that in most situations there are still questions into just how equal, especially in the job market, things are between men and woman.
There is also ageism and this form of discrimination is based on age, generally against the elderly and the young. Most of the time this form of discrimination is found in the job market in which certain people are not offered certain jobs either because they are thought to be too old or too young to perform the job.
Another form of discrimination, homophobia, is thought to be a very big problem, but possibly at this point an unsolvable problem, in the US. Homophobia is the fear, dislike, or hatred of lesbians, gays, and bisexuals. Other smaller forms of this have sprung up such as homophilepobia which literally means the fear of persons of one’s own sex.
Then there are lesser realized discriminations, although this does not make them any less of a problem or any less important.
There is misogyny, which is the hatred or distrust of women. This form of discrimination is generally linked with sexism.
