Terrorism is premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by sub national groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience. Terrorism is broken down into two broader categories: domestic and international.
Domestic terrorism is the unlawful use, or threatened use, of violence by a group or individual based and operating entirely within the United States (or its territories) without foreign direction committed against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives. Domestic terrorism is also divided into two groups: right-wing and left-wing. Right wing terrorist groups are extremist groups that are often racist and antisocial. They hide behind the first amendment rights to free speech and assembly so that they may engage in anti-government and racist activities. Groups such as World Church of the Creators and Aryan Nations are right-wing hate groups that are responsible for many terrorist acts in the United States. Left-wing terrorists are highly idealistic terrorists. They are usually revolutionary socialists that hate capitalism and imperialism and believe that is their job to protect the “people” from these evils. Their main goal is to bring about social change in the United States in the form of revolution instead of our already established political processes. Unfortunately for left-wing terrorists, the fall of communism and the Soviet Union deprived them of their ideological foundation and patronage. Some of the remaining left-wing terrorists are groups that wish to break Puerto Rico free from United State’s sovereignty and form an independent nation with an independent government.
