he sound of the enormous, oak door closing sharpened Amy’s senses as she began to run down the dark hall towards the top of the staircase.
“Toby?” she called, reaching the top of the stairs. “Oh Toby, honey, please be you?”
When she reached the bottom she let a small sigh escape as her spirit sank. He wasn’t there. I couldn’t have just imagined the whole thing, Amy thought to herself. Someone came into the house I heard them.
“Toby? Are you here?” she cried stepping into the middle of the foyer, her echo bounced off the empty walls of the house and resonated inside her head.
“The house is too quiet.” Amy thought to herself as she inched her way back to the staircase.
“Toby?” she whispered desperately.
She placed her foot softly onto the first step; a sickening slurp arose from under her foot. Instinctively she looked down, her stomach churned as the color drained from her face. A steady stream of blood had made its way down the stairs. It dripped warmly off each separate step filling the ruby pool on the one below it. Amy stood frozen unable to believe the oozing puddle that was collecting at her feet. Behind her the heavy wood of the door crashed open sending icy breaths of harsh, bitter wind spinning through the house. Not able to control her terror any longer Amy darted up the stairs, the thickening pools of blood sticking to the bottoms of her feet, splashing up over her bare legs with every step. Tears poured down her colorless face as she ascended up the stairs. Turning down the amber hall she collided with a dark pillar that was blocking the corridor. She met it with such force that she was sent flying backwards, landing in a crumpled heap about four feet away. Amy !
