All my life I’ve been sheltered from the world, that is, until I entered high school. In my home, elementary school, and in middle school I had the idea that racism and prejudice was over, just because slavery was over. That’s what it was before high school: cut and dry, no slavery, therefore, no racism. I thought that the idea of someone being discriminated against because of the color of his or her skin was, well, I didn’t really think about it. That is until I walked into this school. This school opened my eyes to see that everyone is discriminated against. The problem was I didn’t really know why. All I could think of was African–American people were upset because of their ancestors being enslaved. Our civil rights study really did show me how things were, and it has given me a better understanding of why the world is the way it is. I like the way that our class was able to talk about it openly without anyone getting defensive, it’s nice to know that we actually have civil people in this school. What I’m trying to say is that this study of civil rights helped me. It wasn’t just another assignment to do; it was an assignment that I looked forward to doing because I honestly knew nothing. I feel now that I know enough to carry an intelligent conversation with another person, and actually know what I’m talking about. And that means it was a great lesson....
