In Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser illustrates the situation of high school students who work in fast food restaurants, and who are being used, in an author opinion, by their employers. Schlosser writes, “Teenagers have been the perfect candidates for these jobs, not only because they are less expensive to hire than adults, but also because their youthful inexperience makes them easier to control” (68). Obviously, young people cannot expect higher salaries than adults since they are uneducated and unqualified. In order to become responsible, high school students should work. In fact, their first job prepares them for potential jobs, gives them great opportunities to afford their needs, and teaches them how to dispose their revenues.
Work trains high school students for future jobs which follow their education. At work students learn how to be punctual. Sooner or later, they realize that missing work is not the same as missing school, and absents may cause lay off. In addition, working teenagers understand that respect for others and kind attitude are the key to work in an atmosphere of friendship. Schlosser writes, “Teenagers open the fast food outlets in the morning, close them at night, and keep them going at all hours in between. Even the managers and assistant managers are sometimes in their late teens” (68). This shows how teenagers become responsible thanks to work. In addition, they get the promotions and the raises. Even low-paying jobs at chain restaurants prepare students for forthcoming professions and help them to assimilate with future duties and requirements.
Preparing for potential jobs in mature lives is not the only advantage of being a worker and a high school student, at the same time.
