The people felt that Chillingworth was brought to Boston to care for the sick minister Arthur Dimmesdale. Chillingworth and Dimmesdale spend a lot of time together, then they decided to live in the same house. The minister’s health grew worse and the townspeople became worried about Chillingworth’s care for him. The physician claims that the minister ailment has to do with satan. Chillingworth thought the minister had some dark secret that was destroying him , and was determine to do whatever to find out.
Dimmesdale told Chillingworth that only God could heal him. Dimmesdale badly wanted to confess to his congregation, but instead implies himself as being a sinner. His misery got worse. In an attempt to free himself of his sin he fasted and kept all night vigils. During this time he had demonic visions. During one of his visions, he climbed the scaffold where Hester was put to shame . There he saw himself with Hester and Pearl, he thought they would stand together on judgment day.
Chillingworth grew abusive to Dimmesdale . Dimmesdale became fearful of the physician and as Hester about his who he really was, but she remembered her promise and remained silent. Hester noticed that Dimmesdale’s was in bad shape and tried to help him in anyway she can. She had also changed. She ignored the comments of the townspeople and became a very serious person. She went about helping the sick and taking care of the poor. She became more practical going about her business.
