Racism happens all over the world today, based on the belief that someone of another skin color isn’t as good as another. This plague of racism, the constant judging and criticizing of people of other “races”, needs to be put to and end. Whether one’s feelings toward another are acted upon or not it is still racism, racism can be words, an action, or something as “harmless” as a thought.
Though racism itself has been around for a long time the word racism did not appear till later. During the Egyptians rule of the Middle East numerous peoples were made into slaves because the Egyptians felt they were lesser peoples. The context of the term racism that we use today did not appear in the English language until the 1800s to refer to the populations brought together in America: the English and other European settlers, who conquered Indian peoples and those peoples of Africa, brought in to provide slave labor. People who supported slavery came up with the term “race” to justify it in their society. Webster’s dictionary describes racism as a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that those racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. The American Anthropological Association states that largest amount of difference between any two racial groups is only 6% genetic, and the rest is all made up. Science has shown that there is no difference in the different “races”, people of other colors are of the human species and are the same though they may look different. Different species of anything cannot breed and produce offspring, therefore, if two humans of different “races” can breed they are of the same species and there is nothing that separates them other than the pigment of their skin and a few physical features.
With the amount of racism that can be seen throughout the society today, something needs to be done to combat this problem. The problem ...
