The American Pit Bull Terrier is a very popular and misunderstood breed of dog. In fact there are a few other breeds that get misidentified by people as American Pit Bull Terriers. These other breeds include The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, The American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Bulldog. While all of the above dogs share many common traits, each is a different breed of dog. In the dog world The American Pit Bull Terrier and The American Staffordshire Terrier are very closely related and it takes a trained eye to tell the two apart. The term “Pit Bull” is used by many people to identify the above group of dogs as well. In reality there is no “Pit Bull” breed, but for the purposes of this paper I will use the Term “Pit Bull” when talking about either The American Pit Bull Terrier and/or The American Staffordshire Terrier.
The term “Pit Bull” does not mean the same to everyone. To the average person, a pit bull is a vicious, biting dog. The image that comes to mind when one says “pit bull” is that of a monster – a stocky, vicious looking dog with locking jaws, an aggressive temperament, and an appetite for human babies and cuddly kittens. Unfortunately for the real life Pit Bulls, this image is displaced into real life. I am an owner of one of these great dogs and want to show just how wrong these images are. Throughout history these dogs have gained public recognition as man-eaters, but the opposite is true. In fact there are many famous Pit Bulls that have played a huge part in American History. There have been dogs awarded medals for serving the country during wartime, dogs have been given awards for helping protect not only the people around them, but also other animals, and there are even pit bulls trained to be with people who are stuck living their lives in hospitals. I will talk about these dogs more later.
