This book is divided down into three parts. The first third of this book is an overall description of grasslands and the lack of interest in them. As early as the second page, Brown writes about the lack of national parks that are dedicated to the preservation of grasslands. The second third of the book is mostly pictures of the different types of plants and animals that are found in the grasslands. The final third is an in depth description of each animal or plant that was previously pictured.
Grasslands are extremely hot during the summer months and very cold during the winter months. Some grasslands only receive about 10 to 30 inches of rain per year. Sometimes the summers in grasslands are so hot that the grass catches on fire extremely easily. These fires are dangerous because they spread through the dry grass rapidly. During the winter, however, the snow might be so high that it will reach up over your head and beyond.
On the bright side, because of the grasslands unpredictable climate, they are perfect for planting and harvesting crops. Without even knowing it, we are effected by the grasslands every day. Whether it’s a hamburger from Mc Donald’s or because we live there, we have been effected.
There are not many tall tress or bushes in the grasslands, because there is just not enough water for them to live. The amount of wind is another factor that stops the trees from growing very tall. The wind effects more than just the trees though. It effects the crops as well. The amount of wind the grasslands receive often effects the size of the crops harvested.
Grasslands play a large part in all of our lives. We as Americans should do our part in preserving and restoring the grasslands before they are all built into cities or towns.
