How The Harlem Renaissance Writer Zora Neale Hurston Influenced America

Although there were many urban areas sprawling about in the north, Harlem was the true center of black urban life. Harlem was a vibrant multi-cultural community where educated blacks congregated to live amongst their own people; a place where the arts were flourishing. You could almost compare Harlem to ancient Rome during its renaissance. If you were a black writer, there was no other place, Harlem was it. Many authors were doing excellent work at that time in Harlem, but what made it a time of renaissance were those authors who wrote about the social injustices of the time. Some of these authors even began to write about blacks in a positive light, which had never been done before. These writings were about the “new negro”, and they were not going to let “Jim Crow”, the KKK, or any other racist organization hold them back.
Of the many authors that were writing in Harlem during the 20’s and 30’s there are a few whose contributions stand out a little further than the others. It’s not that one writers work was more important than any others. But the significance that some writer’s works made on the future of blacks in America was greater. One writer which stands out in my eyes and to many others would be Zora Neale Hurston. I believe that her work was a very important contribution to the literary arts as well as a lasting impression upon women and black culture for the renaissance and the future.
