ce when mimicking humans. Movement such as walking, running, sitting, standing, jumping and skipping are all complex movements for a machine to copy. Human beings start at a young age from crawling to walking with an internal devotion to get up and walk. We as humans start with slow steps gradually making our way upright mimicking those of the adults around us. For computers though this was not as easy as a task to do without our biological makeup.

Machines have been used extensively for jobs that were once dangerous or even difficult for man in numerous fields. One simple example is the tedious, repetitive job for the line assembly of car manufacturing. The car industry saw these machines as more efficient hands that never needed to sleep, eat, or take coffee breaks. They started the job with the same ‘commitment’ as they finished it. The only dilemma would be if these machines broke down they needed engineers around at all time to fix them so the process could continue. These were the simplest machines at the time with gears and pulleys.

Now consider if a machine could stand at the line with the same ease as their counterpart and when they broke could easily be replaced and the line could continue. Honda’s humanoid Robot ASIMO was working toward just that. ASIMO was a robot that could walk, and climb stairs as their counterparts could do. “ASIMO weighs 43 kilograms and is 120 centimeters tall. A fully charged ASIMO can walk at speeds of 1.6 kilometers per hour and last for 30 minutes before recharging.”

Consider for a moment the possibility of these machines ...
