When is the last time you were scared of being attacked while walking through a parking lot by yourself with your mace ready in hand. Most likely if you are a female it was just the other day when you got off of work late or had to run to the store late at night for something. However if you are a man this might have never happened to you, better yet the thought of being attacked probably doesn’t occupy your mind like it does a females. The fact is males aren’t threatened nearly as much as females are on a day to day base. Being attacked is only the beginning of fear women have; domestic violence is another. Statistically speaking you probably know someone that knows someone, or know someone yourself, that has either been raped or a victim of domestic violence. If you don’t you probably will sometime in your life. Violence against women can be a controversial issue since many don’t realize what qualifies for violence against women and the reality of how serious it is can be. The seriousness can be told by statistics alone; however there are ways to fight it and one day, hopefully, make it a lighter topic of discussion with a little effort from everyone.
Violence against women can range from physical abuse, sexual assault, psychological abuse, and even economical abuse (Population Report). Some may say that these can happen to men too, so why all the commotion about it being toward women? Well the truth of the matter is ninety-nine percent of all rape cases include women as the victim according to UNLV’s Safe Team staff. That leaves only one percent of rape victims being men. If that ratio doesn’t say enough about the drastic difference in proportion, then not much will. But why are these statistics so high?
