l structure of the Republic of France, the current French Constitution has only been in place since October 4, 1958. The U.S. constitution, written in 1787, begins with a preamble which states the goals that the writers of the constitution at that time were wanting to achieve with the establishment of this document. These goals include things like forming a more perfect union, establishing justice, and insuring domestic tranquility. The preamble is a brief summary of what the constitution was created for and what it is supposed to do.

Following the preamble are the seven sections of the constitution called articles. These articles are numbered consecutively, one through seven by roman numerals, in the order that they are presented in the constitution. These articles themselves do not say anything. Their only purpose is to serve as headings for parts of the constitution called sections. It is these sections that are the actual written words of the constitution. Each article contains a series of consecutively numbered sections that all deal with one common theme or subject. For example, Article I of the U.S. Constitution contains sections that deal with the Congress of the United States, also meaning the House of Representatives and the Senate.
