With a total of 17,000 islands, 6,000 of which are inhabited; Indonesia has a population count of 228,437,870. With an infant mortality rate of 40.91 deaths to 1,000 live births, the population growth rate increases by 1.6%. The life expectancy at birth for the total population is 61.22 years. This total is different for men whose life expectancy is 59.13 while women have a life expectance of 63.42 years.
With its huge population, Indonesia consists of several different ethic groups. There is 45% Javanese, 14% Sundanese, 7.5% Madurese, and 7.5% coastal Malays. The different ethnic groups within Indonesia have attributed to the variety in languages spoken there. Bahasa Indonesia is a modified form of Malay and is also the official language of Indonesia. Other languages spoken are English, Dutch, and local dialects which the most popular is Javanese. There are also a variety of religions within Indonesia, some of which are Islam, Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, and Buddhist. With the huge number of people living in Indonesia, the working force consists of 90 million people. More than half of which work in agriculture while the rest are spread out between manufacturing, construction, and transportation and communication.
The government of Indonesia is considered an independent republic. They, much like the United States, have an Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branch. Indonesia’s Executive branch is similar to the United States in that they have a President and Vice President. The elections for these two offices are elected separately by the 700 member People’s Consultative Assembly or MPR for five-year terms. The Judicial branch of Indonesia has a Supreme Court or Mahkamah Agung. The President from a list that the legislature compiles chooses candidates for the office of justice....
