exuality has been brought into our living rooms on the television. Many people feel that homosexuality is wrong and some religious groups feel that it is an outright sin. Because of this it used to be taboo to even talk about this kind of behavior on television. However now a days people don’t just talk about it, they show homosexual relationships both casual and sexual on television, they talk about it on the radio and they have even gotten their own shows for their fashion sense.
Television has come a long way from the Ozzie and Harriet days when the father was always in a suit and the mother was always dressed properly and the two children were perfect. (4) This portrayal of the all American family has changed dramatically.
The 1970’s were the era where television began to portray homosexuality on air. In 1972 the first broadcast portrayal of a homosexual couple on television was aired on the ABC network, which was a made for television movie starring Martin Sheen and Hal Holbrook, called “That Certain Summer”. There were a few more broadcast portrayals of homosexuality in the seventies but none of them were serious roles and none of them were in depth characters.
In 1985 the NBC network aired a serious television movie called “An Early Frost” starring Aidan Quinn as a gay man with AIDS who has to confess to his mother that he is gay and that is how he got the disease. This was a serious movie and shed light and fear into the life of gay men.
