Summary and Thoughts of “Nightwatch”

“Nightwatch” is a tale of racism in a small quiet town. In this story teenage couple comes out of there house after hearing a crash. It turns out an intoxicated girl crashed her car into the boyfriends car. A crowd grows around the seen as the police arrive.
As the police proceed with there investigation it is obvious that the girl is drunk and frazzled. A young black male comes out of the crowd; he tries to calm the clearly tense girl. One of the officers becomes annoyed at the boy and shouts “Get away from her” and before the boy can react, the officer strikes him.
After the officers move the boy and girl into the patrol car, one officer asks the boyfriend whose car got hit to sign a police report saying the black boy was disorderly. The boyfriend refuses to sign saying “I saw you manhandle that young man. He was only trying to quiet the girl.” This story shows that even after the abolition of slavery African Americans are still experiencing racism on a smaller scale.
Personally I agree with the message of this story. It has been about 100 years and people still haven’t gotten over the color of peoples skin. However we have come a long way. Now African Americans can vote freely, obtain equal jobs, attend the greatest schools and more. Organizations such as the KKK are mere powerless groups of disgruntled people who make random appearances on Jerry Springer.
My only problem with this paper is it is written by the father of the witness. He did not experience the story first hand and there for does not have an eye witness account. So when reading the story you must keep in mind that not all of the details are true and, in fact, this story could have happened very differently in real life....
