“Nuyorican Dream”


In our lecture class we saw a video called “Nuyorican Dream.” This video talked about a young man named Robert. He was born in Puerto Rico in 1968. He and his family came to New York and began taking welfare. His sisters (Betty and Taty) got pregnant at early teenage years. His brother Danny is always in jail because he’s always getting caught for robbery. Robert is the only one who graduated from High School and finished college. He got a degree and started teaching in Brooklyn.
As watching this video I began to observe that most Latina women are women who really care about their kids. No matter what they kids do they still accept them as they are. Robert’s mother only got to the forth grade due to the fact that her parents died when she was three years old. At the age of eight years old she worked full time to take care of herself and her grandmother. Betty, one of Robert sister, is a drug addict with three kids of the ages 5, 1, and 2. Ever since they caught her with drugs her mother took custody of her three kids. It’s ashamed that one of the youngest kids she has has emphysema.
Another thing that I discovered watching this video and reading the articles was that some of the things that that I read in the article is true. I couldn’t believe that there is a little percentage of Latino people graduating from high school and college.
I believe that many people who come from different countries have their education as well, but it’s not the same as in the U.S. I have heard by different people that have come from other countries to New York and they have to repeat the grades just because they came from a different country. I believe that this is why many people don’t finish school. Others is because they come to the United States to make a better living and to earn more money so they stop going to school and start working a full time job.
