n students come from “unstable families, suffer from inadequate diets and lack medical care” (Kauchak, 113). An unstable home life could lead to the student unable to focus on the assignment, because of lack of sleep or other problems in his/her life. Inadequate diets often lead to poor performance in school, because of the basic reason: they are hungry and cannot concentrate on schoolwork. Lack of medical care lead to the student being ill for weeks at a time (absent) and unable to receive the material being learned in the classroom. A teacher can help poverty stricken students by educating the parents of free lunch program and other benefits.



4. What is the most effective thing teachers can do to demonstrate that they care about a student?
§ Teachers with high expectations for success help students in structure and support. High expectations include: emphasis on student responsibility, frequent feedback on good behavior. High (personal) expectations from the teacher let the student know that he/she is capable of everything and anything. With individual high expectations, the student understands that the teacher is genuinely interested in his/her progress.

5. What might a kindergarten or first grade teacher do if they discover that important background learning experiences are lacking?
§ A teacher that discovers that important background learning experiences are lacking could help by partnering up that child. This partnering could help by both the students participating in the learning process. Also, you could get the student missing the background learning a tutor or after school help.
