As she grew up in the fifties, the high value of education was instilled in Laura by her parents. Her father began saving for her college education when she was quite young. Her parent’s high expectations inspired her passion for learning and doing her very best. She knew by the second grade that she wanted to become a teacher, and by junior high which college she would attend. Her strong will demonstrated her individualism from a young age, which would continue to have an important role in the rest of her eventful life. As much as she encouraged to be all she could be, gender intensification was still evidently present in Laura’s school years.
Laura was popular in during her school age years and earned good grades in her classes. She developed a love of nature and gardening from her mother. She participated in Brownie Scouts and Girl Scouts as a young girl. In high school, she joined a leadership and character-building organization for high school girls, Tri-Hi-Y, at the local YMCA. From the beginning, the philosophy of the organization held that a leader is not just someone who stands out in front and gives great speeches.
