to why she did not want to stay in Oz, Dorothy replied, “‘no matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful. There is no place like home (pp 32-33).’” At this point in the journey she has begun to realize that no matter where you are and no matter how beautiful it is, without your family it could never be home. She later expresses the stronger feelings of dislike for not being at home, ‘“I don’t like you country, although it is so beautiful. And I am sure Aunt Em will be dreadfully worried over my being away so long (p 103).’” Throughout the journey her feelings became stronger as she was away longer and began missing her family even more.
The traditional minor character that supports the protagonist, Dorothy in this case, is split into three equally important characters in this story: the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. Each one of these characters has their own lesson to learn throughout the journey and their own ironic reasons for wanting to visit the wizard in the city of emeralds, but they depend on each other in order to learn those lessons. Without Dorothy they never would have began their journey since she is responsible for rescuing each of them from their individual environments.
The first character that Dorothy meets on her journey is the Scarecrow. Although he was only created yesterday, he realizes he is missing a great deal of life being stuck on the pole in the middle of a cornfield so asks Dorothy to kindly remove the pole from his back. After Dorothy explains where she is going and why, the Scarecrow asks if he can come along and ask the great wizard to give him brains so he would not be thought of as a fool.
