ushed but proceeded on and planted his flag at the pole. While on their return to camp Scott and his team were caught in a blizzard eleven miles from the nearest supplies and all five men died in their tent.
Since the South Pole had now already been reached, Shackleton decided to attempt the only thing that hadn’t been done, which was the crossing of the Antarctic continent. Shackleton felt that this was a very important expedition, because the British had been beaten to both the North and South Poles and it was up to them to accomplish this. Shackleton began to gather money by gathering financial backers, and by selling the rights to any news and pictures that would come from his expedition. He then proceeded in buying a three hundred ton, one hundred forty four foot long wooden boat named “Polaris”. Shackleton decided to rename the boat the “Endurance” after his family motto “by endurance we conquer”. He also purchased another boat named the “Aurora” which was to carry a team of six to the opposite side of Antarctica where they would have supplies for Shackleton and his team once they had crossed the continent.
Shackleton took a great deal of time planning and consulted with nutritionist to find out how much to ration for the expedition. He also managed to get sixty nine Canadian sled dogs to take for the journey. As the crew of the Endurance was about to set sail, the British army was beginning to mobilize for the beginning of World War 1.
