Hemmingway Short Stories
Clean Well-Lighted Place: Characters: Old man, two waiters
Themes: money is the only thing of importance, Old waiter is the Hemmingway hero, he doesn’t want to go to sleep because sleep=death. Short choppy sentences, no dialog tags. Lord’s prayer with Nada. Emphasis on cleanliness and light.

Cat in the Rain: very few nametags, understatements, short, choppy sentences. Girl wants a different life; unsatisfied, wants children, wants femininity. Lots of tension. George is husband; not a bad guy. Hotelkeeper, maid.

Indian Camp: short choppy sentences, no tags, old person vs. young person, emphasis on action, Father vs. Nick, distinction. “But her screams are not important, I don’t hear them because they’re not important”; “is dying hard?” “…he felt quite sure that he would never die”
