Internal Combustion Engines

An Internal Combustion Engine is a machine that gets power-driven energy directly from the disbursement of the chemical energy of fuel burned in a combustion chamber.   Four principal types of internal-combustion engines are in general use: the Otto-cycle engine, the diesel engine, the rotary engine, and the gas turbine.  The Otto –cycle engine is the familiar gasoline engine used in automobiles and airplanes.  The diesel engine operates by using oil as fuel.  A stroke is one movement of the piston either up or down.  Most car engines use a four-stroke cycle.  The piston moves four strokes then repeats continuously.  Horsepower is the unit of power for measuring the rate at which a device can perform mechanical work.  
During the first stroke, the intake valve opens, the piston moves down and the fuel and air mixture is drawn into the cylinder.  Only the tiniest drop of gasoline needs to be mixed for this to work.  Also during this stroke, the exhaust valve stays closed.  The outer face of the piston is attached to a crankshaft by a connecting
